What is Home and how to decorate with mindfulness?

Before you can dive in the process of decorating your home, it’s important to first capture the essence of what is the real purpose of home and what is the ultimate goal you are trying to achieve when decorating?

With too much noise and distraction in this modern day reality we forgot what we came here to do. We forgot our true purpose. We lost sight of our authenticity, that inner spark that drives us towards our happiness. We forgot that ultimately everything is energy and consciousness and everything that comes from a place of love has a deep positive impact in our lives. We forgot the true meaning of home and how to establish a deep powerful connection with it.

Many times, when we start on a décor project, we are overwhelmed with all the noise and flashy design photos on social media, TV shows and magazines. Our lives get more complex and complicated. We are seduced by the glitter of more and not by the power of less. It can be very tempting to decorate your home based on what’s trendy right now or what you think will be appealing to others. Very often we would choose a color that doesn’t talk to our heart but it was the realtor’s recommendation. Or choose an artwork that doesn’t really have any character but fills up an empty space. One of the most important things to keep in mind while decorating your home is that everything inside should come from a place of love. If you don’t absolutely love it, don’t get it!

Your home is your special place where you unwind, relax and recharge. You need to feel comfortable there and be able to hear your own voice. So, before you start on any decorating journey the first thing you should get clear on is what works for you and what makes you happy.

Where do I start?

My philosophy of home décor is simple:  Upgrade your home – upgrade your wellbeing- surround yourself with happiness!

That’s where Decorating with mindfulness comes in. This is not just a new trend in Home Décor. It’s a way of living.

Mindfulness is all about Living in the moment, being fully present and appreciating the ‘little things” in life. When it comes to home décor my perspective of Decorating with mindfulness is focusing on  the process, dissecting it into very tiny baby steps, going through each step with full awareness and visualizing the result it is bringing to you. Observing yourself and your own mind throughout each step will help you enhance your performance, gain insight and increase your attention to others’ well-being.

Every time you are having a design dilemma always start small. Rule #1:Simplicity always wins! From the start discard all the inessential stuff and ideas that clutter your view and simplify. Make one room a priority at a time and start with baby steps. We all have different ideas of how to make use of the space and what is most appealing to us. Still, we all want our home to be functional and maximize its potential.

Before you even start considering furniture and pieces brainstorm on the functionality of the space first. Sit down and visualize the space and how it will be used on a day-to day basis. Keep in mind your family dynamics, how the flow goes and decide what purpose you want every area to serve. That will give you the overall idea of furniture placement and what type of furnishings to purchase.

Second decide on a feeling and vibe you want to space to bring to you. Browse images, collect inspiration, ideas and make a selection of images you love the most. Visualize yourself in every home environment you’ve pinned and observe what you are sensing and feeling, how the color scheme affects you. The image that stirs your emotions positively and makes your heart jump is the environment you should focus on. This will determine the overall color selection and what textures and fabrics to bring in. Sometimes you can find your source of inspiration in a piece of art, furniture or garment in your closet. Something that makes you so happy and alive that you want to design the whole room around it. Whatever your inspirational piece or image is remember to stick to it throughout the whole process. It’s very easy to get distracted and get stuck if you lose your focus.

Next step is to find out what you need to buy and start making choices with intention. Now that you’ve already mapped out the space and have the idea of how you want to furnish it, it’s time to decide on the furnishings. Choose everything mindfully and think about the purpose of each piece. Does it complement your lifestyle and personality? Is it functional and serving your needs? Do you absolutely love it?  Where do you splurge or save? Answering these questions will help you make intentional choices and avoid making mistakes. You want to get the room right from the start.

Once you are ready with the aesthetic part of the process  the next part of home décor is planning and budgeting. You’ve already done most of your homework and it’s time to get the project finished. Measure your space and estimate the timeframe you’ll need to prepare it.  Make a list of all the furnishings and materials you need to buy and plan your budget accordingly.

Final step – go shopping!

Remember: Always have fun with your projects!  Use home decorating as a mindful practice to destress, unleash your curiosity and get to know yourself better. Bring your awareness into everything you are doing and approach your experience with warmth and kindness.
